It’s a simple fact: when summer heat hits, most of us are prepped to face hot temps with shorts, tanks and sandals. Unfortunately, such a fly summer wardrobe doesn’t fly in your typical professional office environment. So what do you do when it’s hot as all get-out but you must maintain your professional image? Well, little hottie, read on:
Make layers your BFF – they’ll help you comfortably conquer all environments. When building your daily outfit, start with an attractive short-sleeve or sleeveless base that you can wear as a stand-alone item. Wear during outdoor lunches, walks to/from the commuter train or while sitting at your desk. Add on a light jacket, cardigan or pullover for meetings, presentations and other professional situations.
Avoid heavy polyesters – they trap in heat like none other! Choose lightweight cotton or linen. They breathe well and will keep you cool.
Opt for lighter colors (white, pastels, light neutrals) because they reflect heat.
Ladies, check your company dress code for rules regarding hosiery. If you’re required to wear them, perhaps you can lobby for seasonal adjustments. Beware sandals – if the shoe is open in the toe area and the heel area it qualifies as a sandal!
Sleeves vs. No Sleeves
It’s best to avoid wearing sleeveless tops around the office because they can be viewed as inappropriate. Opt for short-sleeve or three-quarter-length tops. If it gets hot at your desk, use our laying advice. And fellas – you must ALWAYS wear sleeves!
