Bringing back the romance: How to plan a quick-nic
Bringing back the romance: How to plan a quick-nic

Life never seems as romantic as it does in the movies. You know the scene – a couple parks a classic car under a weeping willow tree in a field, which looks more like an endless sea of rolling grass, moving in the wind like breaking waves. They get out of the car, throw out a blanket and open a picnic basket filled with wine and dinner. The sun is always setting. Always. Since you’ve already seen this one, we won’t go into what happens next.

Instead, it’s time to reclaim romance and plan our own picnic. We know life is busy and it can be tough to get away for the day. That’s why we’ve written this easy how to plan on planning the quick-nic.

Location, location, location
Most of us will have a hard time finding the endless-waves-of-grain-like field we see on the big screen, so let’s focus on what we have available. Do an online search of your city or state’s name plus “parks.” Most of these parks are well maintained and have acres of options for picnics. Most states have several state parks so chances are good you’ll be able to find one close. Also, think about what lakes or beaches are near you. If you can’t get the field, you might as well have a nice body of water to visit.

Choosing the right food
Since we’re talking about a romantic get-away, this is not the time to settle for a bucket of chicken and a gallon of tea. To make it count, it’s gotta come from the heart, which means coming from your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to go with a sandwich, but it’s gotta be a delicious one. Try this Herbed Chicken and Hot-Pepper Sandwich, which travels well, and for dessert, consider buying some tartlet shells and filling them with strawberry conserve. You could also pick up a dessert from your local bakery since you’re making the entrĂ©e.

Which wine?
It’s still pretty warm outside so we recommend a refreshing wine, such as a Riesling. RELAX Riesling’s screw top makes it very portable and easy to open and reseal without the worry of a spill. Since Riesling goes with so many types of food, pairing is much easier than with other wines. You could also try the refreshing Cool Red, which also comes with a screw top cap.

Plan a surprise
Make the date even more special by having a gift for your significant other. How about bringing along a disposable camera and gifting a small photo album for the photos to commemorate the date? Or you could always go to jewelry. Either way you will have something to remind you of the date that was better than any fictional film.

At this point you’re set up for a memorable date. We’ll leave the ending up to you.
