When revamping an old space or decorating a new one, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the countless window options available at your local home improvement store. But really, it’s quite simple. You have two basic choices for window coverings: curtains or blinds.
When choosing one over the other, keep in mind that your choice depends on your preference of design, function and cost. So before you start hemming and hawing over all of your options, determine what you do and don’t like via our simple comparison. Then you can make the choice that’s right for you.
Curtains for when you want the “look” (oh la la!)
-Available in almost any style imaginable (color, pattern, fabric) to fit your space
-Range in price, from ten dollars to hundreds, or even thousands for custom sets (beware!)
-Wide variety of treatments and accents (curtain rods, hardware)
-Offer a designer aesthetic
-Sheer curtains allow light but little privacy
-Heavy curtains will block almost all light but offer little privacy when fully open
-Take down and wash every 4-5 months (many curtains require professional cleaning)
Blinds answer the call for privacy control and function
-Fair amount of style options (several colors, wood, plastic)
-Precise control of how much light enters the room
-Can be accented with valances and other window treatments
-Can obscure the view into your place while allowing light to shine through
-Require frequent cleaning (they’re dust magnets!) but light weekly cleaning with a duster will do the job
-Should be avoided if you or someone you live with has severe dust/dirt allergies
-Great for bedrooms (light control)
If you want the best of both worlds, and c’mon who doesn’t, you can combine curtains and blinds. It will cost more, but will provide you with the privacy control you may desire without sacrificing the look of a well-designed room!
