What’s Galentine’s Day, you ask? Nobody can explain it better than its creator, the one and only Leslie Knope.
“February 14th, Valentine’s Day, is about romance. But February 13th, Galentine’s day, is about celebrating lady friends. It’s wonderful and it should be a national holiday.”
It may be the best made-up holiday ever.
1. It’s much more fun than Valentine’s Day
Galentine’s Day first appeared on an episode of “Parks and Recreation” in which Leslie and her friends leave their significants at home and gather for a girls-only brunch to celebrate each other, of course. Celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, it is a chance for ladies everywhere to spend some quality time with each other while indulging in awesome things like crafting and cocktails.
2. Relationship statuses don’t matter
Galentine’s Day is meant to celebrate your lady friends regardless of their status – whether they’re single, committed or “it’s complicated”. This alone should seal the deal on why you need to celebrate but if you need more, read on.
3. The Gifts
Leslie loves showering her friends with gifts and Galentine’s Day is no exception. Never extravagant and always thoughtful, the perfect G-Day gifts are meant to be enjoyed.
4. The Food and Drinks
What’s a celebration without food and drinks? Leslie’s festivities began during breakfast but if that doesn’t fit the schedule breakfast for dinner is a great option.
Make your own spread or get your friends involved by putting them in charge of different items. It can be as easy as waffles and whipped cream or a full brunch spread. Get boozy with it by setting out a variety of fruits, juices and wines so your friends can make their own unique cocktails.
5. The Activities
If you want a proper Parks and Recreation Galentine’s Day, you have to do something crafty. Pull up Pinterest, gather up your hot glue and make something super useful that’ll remind you all of the day for years to come. If crafting isn’t your thing then organize something that you and all of your friends will enjoy together. Watch a few chick flicks, have a dance party or simply chill. It’s all about the Q-time on Galentine’s Day, no matter what you do to enjoy!
